Helper & Hand Signup Process



Welcome, and thanks for your interest in signing up as a Helper or Hand with Dolly!

Our mission is to create freedom of time, freedom of choice, and freedom from worry for our customers.

Our Helpers & Hands are independent contractors who connect with our customers across several markets to meet moving and delivery needs using an approved vehicle or just muscle.

Your business can be used for tax reporting and vehicle insurance. If a business is listed, proof of ownership will be required.

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • Licensed and insured to drive your pick-up truck, box truck, or cargo van
  • Can safely lift over 75 pounds

Helpers can potentially make approximately $50 per hour on average. These rates vary based on job availability, and how many Dollys are completed.

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • Will assist a Helper on Dollys
  • Can safely lift over 75 pounds
  • Does not require an approved vehicle BUT Hands are required to arrive on time to multiple locations and complete Dollys using a transportation method of choice.
  • Hands cannot ride along with a Helper in their vehicle to complete Dollys.

Hands can potentially make approximately $35 per hour on average. These rates vary based on job availability, and how many Dollys are completed.

Helper & Hand Signup Process

To kick off the signup process, visit our Dolly Helpers page to enter information.

Choose to become either a Helper or Hand.

Incomplete applications will be rejected.

Step 1: Initial Signup Information

Fill out the signup form with required information.

Note: You will need to review and confirm that the correct information is submitted. Dolly Support will be unable to update personal information for security reasons after submission.

Step 2: Document Uploads

1. Profile Photo & Identification (Helpers & Hands) 

  • The profile photo must include a headshot of the individual signing up. The photo will also be visible to customers and other Helpers, and must be presentable.
  • Filters applied on photos will not be approved. 
  • Helper applicants must submit a clear photo of an unexpired driver's license.
  • Hand applicants can submit a clear photo of state or federal unexpired identification.
  • Learner's permits are not accepted.
  • Temporary documents are not accepted.
  • All information submitted on documents must match original signup information.

2. Vehicles (Helpers only)

  • Approved vehicles manufactured in 1995 and after include pickup trucks, cargo vans, and / or box trucks.
  • There is no minimum size requirement for pickup trucks and box trucks.
  • Vehicles must be in good, working condition (minimal rust or damage).
  • We recommend taking a photo of a sideview angle of the vehicle. The entire vehicle must be visible in the photo submitted. 
  • Trailers must be approved for use. If you will be using a trailer, each side must have a minimum of 2 foot rails or barriers for safety.
  • SUVs are acceptable only if the vehicle is accompanied by a trailer meeting minimum requirements.
  • Rental vehicles, vehicles listed for sale, flatbed trailers, and other vehicle customizations (e.g., customized cargo beds) are prohibited for use on the platform.
  • All documents submitted must match original signup information.

3. Vehicle Insurance (Helpers only)

  • A copy of a valid, unexpired insurance policy.
  • The individual applying must be listed as an insured driver on the policy.
  • If a business is listed, an ownership document must be submitted during signup. Examples include a Secretary of State screenshot, IRS EIN letter, etc.
  • Temporary documents will not be accepted.
  • All information submitted on documents must match original signup information.

Step 3: Onboarding & Training

  • Dolly Support will review documents submitted.
  • An email with Helper & Hand onboarding training through our learning partner Northpass will be sent to the account email.
  • All individuals must complete the training course and the associated quizzes.

Step 4: Background Check & Driving History

  • Background checks are completed through our partner, Checkr.
  • The background check fee is $30, and we are unable to waive this fee. Easily earn back the fee when the first Dolly is completed.
  • To initiate the background check, an email will be sent to the account email asking for consent and payment. Once we have received both, the background check will begin to process.
  • Background checks take an average of 7-10 business days to complete with some taking longer.
  • Due to mandatory requirements, Dolly cannot accept another entity's background check.

Note: If you are applying to become a Helper, a motor vehicle record (MVR) check will also be conducted. There is no additional fee for this check.

Step 5: The Dolly Helper Agreement & W-9 Tax Form

  • After a background check is processed, all individuals must review and sign the Dolly Helper Agreement.
  • Ensure that the Social Security Number (SSN) or Employer Identification Number (EIN) is correctly entered (e.g., XXX-XX-XXXX or XX-XXXXXXX including hyphens).
  • Once the SSN is filled in, the requirement for the EIN will disappear and vice versa. 
  • If an SSN is not entered, an EIN is required. 

Step 6: Account Creation

Finally, an email will be sent to download the Dolly Helper app, and setup an account.

How Long Does Our Signup Process Take? 

The timeline depends on how quickly documents are submitted and reviewed as well as the length of time needing to complete a background check.

  • Ideally, document collection and review take 1-5 days for processing.
  • An average of 7-10 days for a background check, and in some cases, may take longer.

Where Do I Upload My Photos? 

Links to upload photos will be sent by SMS and /or email at the phone number and email address used when signing up. The links will include instructions of which photos to upload.

Why Do I Have to Pay for a Background check?

Background checks are a Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requirement, and the $30 fee cannot be waived. Furthermore, as a result of these requirements, we are prohibited from using alternate background checks from another entity and will require each individual signing up to be processed through a background check for Dolly.

Will I Receive Training Before I Become a Helper or Hand?

All Helpers and Hands are required to complete onboarding training courses and assessment through our partner, Northpass. Training outlines all Helper & Hand expectations as well as how to create best-in-class customer experiences. Once training is complete, you can review the information at any time or refer to our Helper & Hand Resources for more information.

What If I Want to Switch Roles in the Signup Process? 

Visit our support contact page, and submit a request to switch roles.

Where Can I Sign the Helper Agreement and Fill Out the W-9 Form?

A copy of our Helper agreement will be sent via email and / or SMS during the onboarding process. All persons signing up will need to review and sign the agreement. Once the Helper agreement is signed, a W-9 must be filled out for tax reporting purposes.

Waitlisted Markets

How Long Will It Take to be Placed Back into the Signup Process?

The timeline will vary by market. Typically, we estimate a 4-6 week waiting period before resuming the signup process. If you are waitlisted, we appreciate your patience.

How Will I be Informed About Resuming the Signup Process?

We will contact you with the information provided during signup.

What If I am a Helper or Hand Who was Previously Approved?

If you have been previously approved to be a Helper or Hand but have been off Dolly’s platform for over a year, we require a new background check and updated document submissions.

We require up-to-date background checks in order to know who we are working with, uphold strict requirements with who can connect with customers and retail partners, and maintain safety on Dolly's platform.
